Believe it or not, homemade isn’t always healthier than products you buy in a store. Some skincare DIY treatments can actually be bad for your skin, and lead to blemishes, acne, fine lines, and wrinkles. Just because it grows from the earth does not mean that it’s safe to put on your face.
This natural anti-inflammatory product comes from the leaves and bark of trees and is commonly used as a homemade astringent. In reality, witch hazel is distilled by alcohol that can wreak havoc on your skin’s hydration, resulting in dryness and flakiness.
Mayonnaise might taste yummy on a sandwich, but it doesn’t have delicious results for your skin. Using mayo as a hydrating mask can result in a full face of acne. Mayonnaise contains tons of grease, which can clog pores and encourage build-up and bacteria to form underneath your skin.
Lemons seem to be the little darling of DIY beauty gurus, but this citrusy fruit is actually extremely bad for your skin. Lauded as the earth’s natural lightener, lemons have a pH balance of 2, which can really ruin your skin’s natural pH of 4 or 5. Their lightening affects can actually cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun, leading to unsightly peeling and painful blisters.
Cinnamon is a popular DIY exfoliating treatment. But it actually does much more harm than good, leading to blisters, burns, and irritation.
As you can see, DIY skincare treatments can be really bad for your skin. Instead, opt for all natural skin care products that you can buy in a store, such as a Vitamin C serum.
