What Are the Main Causes of Acne?

November 17, 2017

Teen acne is the most common type of acne, and is typically brought on by hormone changes related to puberty. However, adult acne is also a common occurrence and can happen for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the cause, a daily skin care routine can help combat acne development and nourish your skin.

Teen Acne

There is a reason the teenage years often include the descriptor “raging hormones”. Between the ages of 10 and 16, many boys and girls start to develop acne. This unpleasant occurrence can typically be blamed on one or more of the following:

  • Hormone fluctuate (especially a rise of testosterone)
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation
  • Certain medicines (including lithium and corticosteroids)

Washing the face frequently and maintaining an organic and natural skin care regimen can help reduce the frequency and severity of pimple breakouts.

Adult Acne

For most people, acne goes away once they reach adulthood and their hormones balance out. However, some people never get a break and continue experiencing acne into adulthood. Others may go years without acne, only to have it return unexpectedly in their later years. Here are a few potential causes of adult acne:

  • Hormones (yes, even adults can have imbalanced hormone levels)
  • Excessive stress
  • Exposure to pollutants
  • Pore-clogging skin-care products
  • Washing the face too frequently and intensely

Even some foods can contribute to adult acne, including sugar, fried foods, chocolate and caffeine. Pay close attention to what you eat before breakouts occur. If you consistently notice acne the day after eating chocolate, it’s best to avoid chocolate for the sake of your skin.

Treat Your Acne

There are practically endless products marketed at acne reduction, but not all of them contain ingredients that are safe for the skin. To avoid irritating your skin further, look for anti-acne serums that are made with natural ingredients. There are also skincare accessories available from Timeless Skin Care that can help remove impurities and reduce acne scars, including the Micro Dermaroller for acne.
